Grunge isn't a really a style, it's more of a way of life or state of mind. This state of mind is then portrayed in the style of clothes worn. Kurt didn't just introduce ripped & worn jeans, flannel shirts and battered converse, he gave off an 'I don't give a fuck' message that was also present throughout his music. He made not caring cool. And 20 years later, grunge is still extremely popular.
The main reason Kurt dressed the way he did was actually not because he intentionally chose his clothes. In fact he was well and truly poor. He pretty much put on what he had to hand, and constantly wore the same things over and over, hence the mismatched, patched up, scruffy look. So his massive impact on fashion was probably not intended.
So you can see how you could go out and buy clothes in the style of grunge, but you can't buy grunge itself. You literally have to be grunge too start with. However, there's nothing stopping you from incorporating grunge inspirations into your style if you like. I know I definitely have. If you have read my previous blog posts you will know that I love 90's grunge! So flannel, ripped/worn denim, converse, vans, doc martins, layering, chokers and stripes are all examples of 'grunge fashion' and I have put together 4 grunge inspired looks. I haven't used any band tee's, as although these are usually seen as a grunge style, they actually weren't worn that often. Plain tops or tops with patterns such as stripes were a lot more common.
One of my outfits was inspired by a recent post on the blog Le Happy, written by one of my favourite bloggers. Click here to check it out and find out which one!

Crazy to think just how big of an impact Kurt had on fashion, he'd probably be laughing at us all for emulating his style haha! You're so right, you can't be girly and trendy in your style but wear grunge clothes. It doesn't work. You've got to be grunge
